Energy-saving Xaloy Barrel Heating System Now a Ferromatik Option
NECKARSULM, Germany – Ferromatik Milacron,is taking the lead in offering the energy saving and process control benefits of Xaloy’s nXheat™ of induction barrel heating system as an option on its state-of-the-art injection molding machines. An alternative to conventional heater bands, nXheat™ (patents pending) saves up to 70% on barrel heating cost, cuts downtime and maintenance costs related to heater band failure, and provides tighter control of melt temperature to improve part quality and reduce scrap, among other benefits.
CAP-TEC 300 machine designed for high-speed production of thin-wall packaging items is one of several Ferromatik Milacron models now supplied with Xaloy nXheat™ induction barrel heating.
“The nXheat™ system is now an element of our Green Line program for energy-saving, high performance CAP-TEC machines,” said Winfried Stöcklin, General Manager, Business Unit K-TEC of Ferromatik Milacron. The company considers it as an option on the complete machine range and provides retrofit service.

How nXheat™ works. The system uses a high-frequency power supply and helical induction coils to generate heat directly within the barrel wall. A thermal insulating layer is interposed between the coils and barrel to combat heat loss, increase efficiency and improve control response.
Ferromatik offers the nXheat™ system in two forms: 1) all-zone nXheat™ in which induction heating completely replaces conventional heater bands; and 2) nXheat-Hybrid™ in which power-saving induction technology heats the barrel’s feed zone while conventional band heaters handle downstream zones.
All-zone nXheat™ delivers maximum savings in power consumption, about 50 to 70 percent. It is the ideal system for larger machines with more than three heating zones because of the high value of the reduction in power consumption, according to Bruce Taylor, business manager for nXheat™ at Xaloy.
On smaller machines with two or three zones the nXheat-Hybrid™ system can deliver most of the savings of the all-zone system because induction is used in the barrel’s feed zone where the greatest amount of heat input is required to start the melting process. On such machines, which usually have barrels with inside diameters of 70 mm or less, the hybrid system can provide a 30 to 50 percent reduction in power consumption for barrel heating compared to systems with uninsulated band heaters.
